About this Position
Langston University Department of Athletics is seeking applications for the position of Head Football Coach. Located in Langston, Oklahoma, 40 miles north of Oklahoma City, Langston University is a Historically Black College & University (HBCU), an National Assocation Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institution and member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). This is a full-time 12-month position.
The Head Football Coach is expected to serve as a transformational leader who recruits and develops talented student-athletes, designs and executes effective offensive and defensive systems, builds and mentors a high-performing coaching staff, manages the full scope of program operations, cultivates strong donor and alumni relationships, and represents the institution’s values with professionalism and integrity. The coach serves as the primary ambassador of the football program to internal and external stakeholders, including prospective student-athletes and their families, campus leadership, faculty, alumni, donors, and the broader community.
The Head Football Coach is responsible for building a competitive program that can contend for conference championships while upholding high academic standards, fostering a positive student-athlete experience, and ensuring full compliance with all NAIA rules and regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITES
- Ensure the effective teaching and instruction of all specific technical skill areas to student-athletes.
- Coach student-athletes in their growth and development in the sport with techniques and fundamentals of their position and sport conditioning.
- Develop team and individual strategies to have the greatest chance of winning within the sport, through on-court/field teaching and video instruction.
- Design instructional programs for the team and individual student athletes and instruct student-athletes on how to implement a game plan as determined for each competition.
- Travel to events and evaluate potential student-athlete talent, correspond with all prospects via email, phone, face to face conversations, etc.
- Complete all necessary Compliance and Institutional documentation as required.
- Recruit student-athletes who meet University academic and athletic standards.
- Responsible for direct supervision of assistant coaches, all staff disciplinary actions, and any other personnel management duties as required to maintain a successful staff.
- Responsible for overall performance of athletes’ academic progress by working closely with the academic support staff.
- Work with the Assistant Athletic Director/Compliance Officer to make sure programs and student-athletes are complying with all rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.
- Responsible for successfully managing an annual budget including all necessary fiscal planning.
- Promote the program to the public including, media, donors, the University community and the general public to increase visibility and revenues for the program.

Required Qualifications
Education and Expereince:
- Bachelor's in Health, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sports Management or an equivalent field of study.
- 5-7 years of collegiate football coaching experience (at any level - assistant coach, coordinator, etc.) OR equivalent experience (which might include high-level high school coaching, professional football experience, or other relevant roles)
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
- Upon hire, completion of the NAIA Coaches Certification module and 15 passenger van driving certification is required
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
- Knowledge of NAIA Rules – This position shall have a strong working knowledge and understanding of all NAIA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.
- Sport Experience – Extensive knowledge of individual and team skills with the ability to teach these skills.
- Recruiting – The ability to evaluate and compare athletic talent for potential growth and development of student-athletes. Maintain correspondence with a large number of prospects: e-mail, letters, and phone.
- Academic Monitoring – The ability to establish and monitor an academic system that ensures academic success for the student-athlete.
- Budget Management – Must be able to work within the budget given by the athletic department.
- Travel – The ability to plan, organize and execute travel arrangements using university and fundraised dollars.
- Computer Skills – This position is expected to have computer literacy.
- Communication Skills – This position is expected to have a high level of communication skills with student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, their coaches, counselors, parents and boosters in the community.
- Fundraising – Actively develop and expand the football program's support base through strategic fundraising initiatives and community engagement. This includes cultivating relationships with alumni, parents, local businesses, and community members who can provide financial support, in-kind donations, or volunteer assistance to the program.
Preferred Qualifications
Education and Expereince:
- Health, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sports Management or an equivalent field of study.
- 3-5 years as a head coach or coordinator expereince and experience coaching in postseason games (bowl games, playoffs, championships).
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED usage.
- Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
Advanced Coaching Credentials and Professional Development
- Attendance at the NAIA coaches meeting held annually at the AFCA national convention.
- Membership in professional coaching organizations (AFCA, NAIA Coaches Association).
Proven Success in Program Building and Turnaround
- Documentation of player development success (athletes advancing to graduate programs, professional opportunities, or postgraduate success)
- History of recruiting classes that exceeded previous program standards
- Experience establishing or revitalizing program traditions and team culture
- Evidence of sustainable program growth over multiple seasons
Data Analytics and Performance Evaluation
- Experience with statistical analysis for personnel decisions and game planning
- Understanding of key performance indicators (KPIs) for program assessment
- Familiarity with recruiting analytics and evaluation metrics
- Ability to create data-driven reports for athletic administration
